Who was Amadeu de Sousa Cardoso

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (Amarante, 14 November 1887 - Espinho, 25 October 1918) was a Portuguese painter.

Belonging to the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso stands out among all of them for the exceptional quality of his work and for the dialogue he established with the historical avant-garde of the early 20th century. His painting is articulated in an open manner with movements such as cubism, futurism or expressionism, reaching in many moments - and in a sustained way in the production of the last few years -, a level that is comparable to the top production of international contemporary art.

Death at the age of 30 will dictate the abrupt end to a pictorial work in full maturity and a promising international career, but still in the process of being affirmed. Amadeo would be long forgotten, inside and, above all, outside Portugal and it was only very recently that he began to have the recognition that his work deserves.
